Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the sustainability-focused staff networks and engagement programs:

Canadore College has a sustainability-focused network open to non-academic staff through the Sustainable Development Task Force. This task force is intentionally diverse, including members from student government, faculty, senior tream, support staff, and other departmental leads . It is committed to embracing and integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the institution.

The Task Force meets quarterly to discuss ongoing projects, share ideas, and contribute to various sustainability initiatives. Led by Co-Chairs Shawn Chorney (Vice President, Strategic Infrastructure Indigenous and Learner Services) and Jesse Russell (Project leader, Living Sustainability Centre), the Task Force also highlights its members and their sustainability efforts in the "Our Path to 2031" newsletter.

Canadore College actively promotes racial equity and social justice through its Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Accessibility (IDEA) strategy. This strategy is designed to foster a positive, inclusive campus environment that upholds equity, human rights, and safety for all individuals. The College also offers EDI training modules to support these goals. Learn more

Additionally, the First Peoples’ Centre plays a crucial role in advancing these values by providing cultural and academic support to approximately 700 Indigenous learners each year. The Centre offers free training to staff on topics such as Truth and Reconciliation and the Significance of Land, and more, ensuring a deeper understanding and commitment to Indigenous perspectives and cultural inclusion. These efforts collectively contribute to the College's dedication to fostering a community that values and supports diversity and social justice. Learn more

3.2 Sustainability-focused staff training

Canadore College provides sustainability-focused training opportunities to non-academic staff on at least an annual basis. The College maintains a strong budget and Professional Development Policy to support staff development, including funding for educational opportunities, conferences, workshops, and courses from other institutions. This policy also includes offering free on-site learning opportunities.

For example, Canadore partnered with Beyond21 Academy to offer high-quality professional development. A recent course, "Sustainable Innovation: Integrating Circular Economy and Biomimicry into Climate Action," involved a 3-day experiential training program that included practical activities like planting a Miyawaki Forest. These initiatives are part of the College's commitment to expanding staff knowledge and skills in sustainability through various educational and experiential learning opportunities.

Among several other training opportunities, Canadore partners with First Nations' Technical Insitutute (FNTI) to provide free training opportunities to its' staff. 

Some courses include:

  • Significance of Land
  • Introduction to Indigenous World Views. 
  • Truth and Reconcilation
