The iCanLead Learning Framework at Canadore College is designed to enhance student leadership and community engagement through simulations, team challenges, and discussions focused on sustainability and well-being. This program is structured around three key focal points: issue education, skill development, and action planning. It aims to improve leadership skills, foster positive change, and develop action plans for campus and community development.
The program’s outcomes include:
- Enhancing participants' leadership abilities to drive change both on campus and in the broader community.
- Creating and implementing action plans that contribute to positive developments.
- Strengthening student leadership capacity through custom modules and case studies reflecting Canada’s diverse cultures and traditions.
The framework also incorporates themes like anti-bullying, positive campus culture, and active citizenship.

At Canadore College, the Canadore Students' Council (CSC) plays a crucial role in enhancing student life through various programs and initiatives . Located strategically with the Office of Access and Inclusion, CSC fosters an inclusive environment and supports a range of student-led organizations focused on ecological integrity and social justice.

Sustainability Club: This club is dedicated to addressing environmental issues and promoting actions to improve the planet, aligning with ecological integrity goals.

Pride Club: Focused on raising awareness and promoting inclusion for the 2SLGBTQA+ community, the Pride Club also supports OUTLoud North Bay, which provides resources and a safe space for 2SLGBTQA+ youth and allies in the North Bay area.
Students also have opportunities to collaborate with the Office of Access and Inclusion to support events related to social justice and racial equality, including information booths and various learning sessions.

2.2 Sustainability-focused co-curricular activities

The college actively participates in sustainability-focused events such as SDG Week Canada and Global Goals Week. These events provide valuable opportunities for staff, students, and the broader community to engage in meaningful activities and contribute to sustainability efforts.
In May 2022, Canadore College, in collaboration with Earth in a Nest Business Collaborative, hosted the region’s inaugural Sustainability Summit. This free, two-day event was accessible to students, employees, and the broader community.
The summit featured a diverse lineup of expert speakers, including authors, academics, sustainability professionals, and community leaders, who addressed a wide array of sustainability topics. The event was offered in a hybrid format, with both in-person and national streaming options available.
The first day of the summit focused on general sustainability issues, covering themes such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the impact of climate change in our region, sustainability from Indigenous perspectives, and food insecurity.
The second day centered on sustainability in business, showcasing a panel of local businesses dedicated to sustainable practices and introducing the “Business Sustainability Tool Kit” developed by Earth in a Nest Business Collaborative.

Canadore College has a sustainability-focused peer-to-peer education program through its student-led Sustainability Club. This club addresses key environmental issues and sustainable initiatives, aiming to enhance the global climate. It also connects students with nature by organizing hikes to promote well-being and celebrate the natural world. Additionally, the club hosts educational sessions to further engage students in sustainability practices and initiatives.

Canadore College provides sustainability-focused employment opportunities for students on an annual basis. Through the Centre for Career Development, students can secure part-time positions of up to 10 hours per week during the school year and full-time positions of up to 35 hours per week during the summer months.
Specifically, the Living Sustainability Centre employs two students part-time during the school year and up to four students full-time during the summer. The position, titled "Sustainable Development Student Assistant," allows students to gain valuable experience by participating in various sustainability projects on campus and within the community. These projects include species at risk monitoring, invasive species removal, waste audits, hydroponic food growing, and tree planting and maintenance. Students also have the opportunity to collaborate with student leadership groups such as CSC and iCanLead.

To reduce the use of single-use plastics, Canadore Students' Council has funded the Fill it Forward program, providing reusable bottles and mugs to students at a subsidized rate—$1 per bottle and $4 per mug.
All proceeds support student bursaries for climate champions on campus. Each piece of reusable drinkware features a scanner that tracks five key environmental factors: Ocean Pollution Prevented, Waste Diverted, Power Saved, Emissions Saved, and Land Use Saved.
Additionally, each scan contributes up to one dollar to global charities such as WaterAid, charity: water, Digdeep, Water First, Second Harvest, and ONETREEPLANTED.
Description of additional sustainability-focused co-curricular activities for students:
Canadore College offers a unique outbound mobility experience designed to engage students with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a culturally immersive program. Led by Registrar Jeannette Miron, the "Cultural Awareness" course provides a 10-day journey that combines cultural exchange, volunteerism, and environmental education.
During this program, Indigenous students from across Ontario participate in sustainable development projects in the Los Santos region of Costa Rica. Activities include volunteering with Green Communities to support organic coffee farmers in preserving biodiversity, exploring volcanic landscapes and pristine rivers, and planting trees to offset their carbon footprint at the Arenal Ecological Park.
Students also engage with local Indigenous communities (Malekus and Chorotegas), learning about their cultural practices, participating in traditional ceremonies, and contributing to construction projects for outdoor learning spaces. The experience culminates with a visit to the Blue Zones in Nicoya, known for its high concentration of centenarians, where students gain insights into longevity and well-being.

Student participation in the institution's sustainability activities is determined through several methods. All students are invited to join various clubs, groups, workshops, and activities related to sustainability.
To track and assess participation, the institution employs a range of methodologies, including:
- Registration Numbers: Monitoring the number of students who sign up for sustainability-related events and programs.
- Event Attendance: Recording how many students attend these events.
- Social Media Engagement: Analyzing interactions and engagement on social media platforms related to sustainability initiatives.
- Videos: Tracking views and engagement with sustainability-related videos.
- Signage: Assessing interactions with sustainability-themed signage on campus
- Passer By: students passing through during events or asking information at booths at orientation and other events. Oscar AI in the cafeteria interacts with students disposing of waste.
