14.44 Btu / GSF / Degree-Day (°F)

Part 2. Reduction in source energy use per unit of floor area

Baseline year energy consumption

STARS 2.2 requires electricity data in kilowatt-hours (kWh). If a baseline has already been established in a previous version of STARS and the institution wishes to continue using it, the electricity data must be re-entered in kWh. To convert existing electricity figures from MMBtu to kWh, simply multiply by 293.07107 MMBtu/kWh.

Electricity use, baseline year (report kWh):
kWh MMBtu
Imported electricity 25,073,310 Kilowatt-hours 85,550.13 MMBtu
Electricity from on-site, non-combustion facilities/devices (e.g., renewable energy systems) 0 Kilowatt-hours 0 MMBtu

Stationary fuels and thermal energy, baseline year (report MMBtu):
MMBtu
Stationary fuels used on-site to generate electricity and/or thermal energy 48,759.36 MMBtu
Imported steam, hot water, and/or chilled water 0 MMBtu

Total site energy consumption, baseline year:
134,309.49 MMBtu

Baseline year building space

Gross floor area of building space, baseline year:
2,210,347 Gross square feet

Baseline period

Start and end dates of the baseline year (or 3-year period):
Start date End date
Baseline period Jan. 1, 2009 Dec. 31, 2009

A brief description of when and why the energy consumption baseline was adopted:
The baseline year was chosen as it was after any major renovations and building construction. The baseline year is recent enough to capture reliable data from the past and use that to see how much progress we have made with sustainability efforts.

The 2009 (baseline) stationary fuels used on site (188,277MMbtu) was indicated as being in the records. (per Jack Philips' email, 3.18.20). - BRH

Source energy

Source-site ratio for imported electricity:
3

Total energy consumption per unit of floor area:
Site energy Source energy
Performance year 0.11 MMBtu per square foot 0.18 MMBtu per square foot
Baseline year 0.06 MMBtu per square foot 0.14 MMBtu per square foot

Metric used in scoring for Part 2

Percentage reduction in total source energy consumption per unit of floor area from baseline:
0

Optional Fields

Documentation to support the performance year energy consumption figures reported above:
---

A brief description of the institution's initiatives to shift individual attitudes and practices in regard to energy efficiency:
See Kill-a-Watt in credit EN-1.

A brief description of energy use standards and controls employed by the institution:
Most areas are heated to 70 degrees F and cooled to 72 degrees F.

(10.25.22) : HDD and CDD were calculated using for FY 2021-22: https://portfoliomanager.energystar.gov/pm/degreeDaysCalculator
which uses the base of 65 degrees-F as stated for Part 2.

A brief description of Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting and other energy-efficient lighting strategies employed by the institution:
The campus is trying to convert more and more spaces to LED. Many large spaces and spaces with daily usage have already been converted to LED lighting. All the street lights have been converted to LED.

A brief description of passive solar heating, geothermal systems, and related strategies employed by the institution:
n/a

A brief description of co-generation employed by the institution:
n/a

A brief description of the institution's initiatives to replace energy-consuming appliances, equipment, and systems with high efficiency alternatives:
Any building remodeling projects would be looked at as a way to evaluate the current energy consumption items and challenge if there are better alternatives available.

Additional documentation to support the submission:
---

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
The grid purchased electricity comes from 19,000,000+ kWh for Calvin's main bill and ~1,000,000 kWh for the remaining properties in the institutional boundary.
Conversion from kWh to MMBtu was performed with information from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (eia): https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/index.php?page=about_energy_conversion_calculator
Solar panel power (on-site renewable) comes from Chuck Holwerda.
(JW 1.22.19)

For the performance year energy consumption I placed our imported electricity, steam, and chilled water under electricity because it is all sourced from electricity and we don't have it separated it out. (KM 1.18.20)
