Part 1. Greenhouse gas emissions inventory

Has the institution conducted a GHG emissions inventory within the previous three years that includes all Scope 1 and 2 emissions? :
Yes

A copy of the most recent GHG emissions inventory:
A brief description of the methodology and/or tool used to complete the GHG emissions inventory:
SIMAP calculators were used to find data for OP-1. See the attached CSV file.
Commuting emissions were calculated with the transportation survey found in OP-15.
Business travel: was found through the records of mileage from Calvin Travel Services and includes plane, air, and train travel booked through Calvin
Purchased goods and services: comes from paper and food purchasing. Information on paper can be found in OP-14 and the attached SIMAP csv file. Food purchasing can be found in OP-7.

Has the GHG emissions inventory been validated internally by personnel who are independent of the GHG accounting and reporting process and/or verified by an independent, external third party?:
Yes

A brief description of the GHG inventory verification process:
Student interns collect the data and are overseen by Calvin Facilities personnel and the STARS liaison. The results are validated internally by Environmental and Energy Sustainability Committee (EESC), which approves the data each year. The results are additionally validated and reviewed by the head of the Physical Plant, Russell Bray, before the SIMAP results are put forth either to the EESC or to Second Nature.

Documentation to support the GHG inventory verification process:
---

Scope 1 GHG emissions
Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions, performance year:
Weight in MTCO2e
Stationary combustion 9,515.72 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Other sources (mobile combustion, process emissions, fugitive emissions) 406.78 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total gross Scope 1 GHG emissions, performance year:
9,922.50 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Scope 2 GHG emissions
Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions, performance year (market-based):
Weight in MTCO2e
Imported electricity 9,517 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Imported thermal energy 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total gross Scope 2 GHG emissions, performance year:
9,517 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

GHG emissions from biomass combustion
Gross GHG emissions from biogenic sources, performance year:
0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Scope 3 GHG emissions
Does the GHG emissions inventory include Scope 3 emissions from the following sources?:
Yes or No Weight in MTCO2e
Business travel Yes 5,339.28 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Commuting Yes 5,520.95 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Purchased goods and services Yes 2,078.02 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Capital goods --- ---
Fuel- and energy-related activities not included in Scope 1 or Scope 2 --- ---
Waste generated in operations --- ---
Other sources --- ---

Total Scope 3 GHG emissions, performance year:
12,938.25 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

A brief description of how the institution accounted for its Scope 3 emissions:
The 'Business Travel' data was accounted for by contacting the Calvin travel services and reviewing their records for study abroad and business travel by plane, car, or train.
For 'Commuting' the SIMAP and STARS intern sent out a survey to faculty, students, and staff that took count of who commuted as well as how they commuted.
'Purchased Goods and Services' contains the compilation of food and paper emissions for which data was gathered from John Alberts and Ryan Hartman respectively.

Part 2. Air pollutant emissions inventory

Has the institution completed an inventory within the previous three years to quantify its air pollutant emissions?:
Yes

Annual weight of emissions for::
Weight of Emissions
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) 24.30 Tons
Sulfur oxides (SOx) 0.14 Tons
Carbon monoxide (CO) 19.47 Tons
Particulate matter (PM) 1.84 Tons
Ozone (O3) ---
Lead (Pb) 0 Tons
Hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) 0 Tons
Ozone-depleting compounds (ODCs) 0 Tons
Other standard categories of air emissions identified in permits and/or regulations ---

Do the air pollutant emissions figures provided include the following sources?:
Yes or No
Major stationary sources Yes
Area sources No
Mobile sources No
Commuting No
Off-site electricity production No

None
A brief description of the methodology(ies) the institution used to complete its air emissions inventory:

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
Information from Nick Thompson, Director of Facilities, Planning, and Sustainability. 2018-19 data were used as the last data set available from a "normal" year. We anticipate being able to use 2022-23 data in our next report, which will help to re-establish a baseline.
