A brief description of the institution’s community garden:
The Calvin Campus Gardens operates on two sites. The Knollcrest East site provides 24 rental plots for student, staff, and community gardeners currently rented by 24 people. The Hampshire Garden Site provides 28 plots currently rented by 29 people. The goal of the Calvin Campus Gardens is to provide opportunities to grow food for people who don't have access to land. At both sites, gardeners may only use organic gardening techniques. They are instructed on beneficial insects and other wildlife and gardeners are also encouraged to use written resources provided by Calvin that explain water conservation, soil regeneration, and cover cropping. The Calvin Campus Gardens also employ 1-2 students per growing season as garden caretakers, and in this past growing season, they were returning citizens from the Calvin University Prison Initiative through Hanlon Correctional Facility who are now living in the adjacent Garden House.
