Energy and Environmental Sustainability Committee

Mandate:

The Energy and Environmental Sustainability Committee (EESC) shall be responsible to:

1. Advocate for the implementation of the Calvin Statement on Sustainability.
2.Serve as a structure for the exchange of information and communication among the decision-making units that influence environmental and energy sustainability.
3.Recommend to responsible parties environmental stewardship and sustainability standards and guidelines for campus services and activities.
4.Track progress of sustainability efforts on campus and present annual reports to the Faculty Senate.

Reporting Relationship:
The Energy and Environmental Sustainability Committee will report to the Faculty Senate.

•A student representative of the Environmental Stewardship Coalition

•The vice president of administration and finance (ex officio)
•A faculty representative of the Plaster Creek Stewards leadership team
•A faculty representative of the Sustainability Summit leadership team
•A faculty CERF mentor
•A representative of Residence Life staff involved in sustainability

Among the faculty EESC members, all three academic divisions shall be represented and one will serve as chair.

Descriptions of the activity and accomplishments of the committee are available for the last three years. Here is a link to the most recent available report, provided by the FY 18-19 chair Dr. Kuperus-Heun, summarized below:

•EESC encouraged attendance at two CEAP Poster Sessions
•EESC tracked all implemented CERF projects for both energy and financial savings.
•EESC supported the Kill-a-watt competition in January and the Mad Farmer Food Festival in May, both organized by Residence Life.
•EESC recommended that the college president commit Calvin to being an “institutional partner” for the CRCNA Climate Witness Project.
•EESC heard regular reports about the Calvin Community Garden, composting/recycling, Student Environmental Stewardship Coalition, Student Senate, and Physical Plant activities.
•EESC provided inputs to the strategic planning process and the Commons Union project.

Dr. Gail Heffner, as Acting Director of Sustainability, is overseeing Dr. Becky Haney, Academic Coordinator for Sustainability, and Mr. Russell Bray, Director of Facilities, in coordinating sustainability activities on campus. Since the college president signed the Second Nature Climate Commitment in December 2017, Calvin has increased our efforts tracking our sustainability initiatives to make progress toward meeting the Climate Commitment goals.

This position is responsible for maintaining the Sustainability Course Inventory. This position also encourages departments and faculty to expand their sustainability course offerings or number of courses with a unit on sustainability. This position oversees the implementation of Sustainability Literacy Assessment in individual courses and pursues university-wide assessment.
