Hornet Waste Challenge
A brief description of the campaign:
The Office of Sustainability created a game to teach students, staff, and faculty about the campus waste diversion programs in a fun way. The game challenges players to sort trash, recycle, and compost materials correctly and win fun items to build a digital park. At the end of the game, each participant gets a completion certificate.

This campaign has increased the amount of properly categorized trash thrown out by student, staff and faculty.

Oscar AI Waste Sorting
A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Oscar is an artificial intelligence "Smart Trash bin " placed at the university union to help the campus community properly sort their waste. This system detects what is on the user's hand and shows them on a screen which bin to use. Also, the system shows an "X" and makes noise when the user puts the item in the wrong bin.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
This campaign aims to increase waste diversion at the Univesity Union and change the users' behavior by stopping in front of the waste bins before disposing of their waste.

As part of Sacramento State joining the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), the campus gained access to the SDG Academy. Now, Sacramento State students, faculty, and staff have access to online classes, research, and professional training. They also can earn certifications and degrees through the SDG Academy.
