A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:

The Bioconversion and Agricultural Collaborative (BAC Yard) houses all the methods used to promote sustainable grounds on campus. The BAC Yard is home to 3 different types of composting: vermicomposting, hot composting, and windrow composting. Our compost processes food waste generated from campus eateries, coffee grounds from our coffee shops, leaves from our 3,700 trees, and other green waste produced on campus. This compost helps the produce in our garden to grow as well as fertilizing many of the fruit trees on campus. The produce grown in the BAC Yard is donated to the food pantry program, an initiative to help students with financial hardship have access to fresh fruit and vegetables.

Transportation Sustainability Initiative

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:

Parking Structure 5 is on the forefront of our sustainable transportation initiative. The structure utilizes a heat mapping system that counts how many parking spaces are free, reducing unnecessary circling around the building to find an open space. It also features daylight sensors which dims the lights automatically during the day to reduce energy consumption and contains 54 electric vehicle charging stations. Additionally, parking structure 5 was awarded Park Smart Gold certification, becoming the first university in the country to receive this distinction.

To further promote sustainable travel, Sac State provides students with a bus pass for Sacramento public bus and light rail systems in an effort to reduce the number of cars on the road. Our campus is also Bike Campus USA certified, featuring many locations to lock up bikes as well as electric scooters or bicycles that students can rent.
