Research Inventory

A copy of the inventory of the institution’s sustainability research (upload):
Inventory of the institution’s sustainability research:

The attached excel spreadsheet includes a comprehensive listing of sustainability research by CSUN authors. Quick summary: Our extensive research of library databases identified 710 SDG covered publications, across 531 unique articles, co-written by 517 CSUN authors.

Understanding sustainability research involves taking a comprehensive view of the data. To accomplish this  the data is presented across three (3) different sheets or Tabs.

Sheet 1 "SDGs Combined" presents a numbered list (N=710) of all SDG identified articles, CSUN author and identifies which SDG pertains to this publication. There is some duplication in this list (N=179) as some articles are listed under multiple SDGs.

Sheet 2, titled "Unique articles" is a listing of all of the articles minus duplications (N=531) and indluces all authors, (Note: each article is either co or sole authored by a CSUN author).

Sheet 3, titled "CSUN Authors" is a complete list of all CSUN authors on sustainability and includes departmental affiliation (N=517).

A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:

To gather required data we coordinated with  CSUN Reference and Instruction Librarian Nancy Young and CSUN Research and Sponsored Programs Director of Strategic Research Initiatives, Dr. Sherrie Hixon.

The CSUN Research and Sponsored Programs Office did an assessment of their data to see how many faculty are doing research through research and sponsored programs (applying for grants) CSUN. The number of  Total Researchers (N=574)  came from an unduplicated list of all faculty who have funded research through Research and Sponsored Programs Office at CSUN. It was validated by CSUN administrators in Research and Sponsored Programs who track this information. Their data collection process also included a list of all faculty, staff and students who have had Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval. To do research at CSUN requires seeking IRB

To determine how many faculty are doing research related to sustainability, the Institute for Sustainability, worked with CSUN Research Librarians to identify the best approach to gather sustainability related publication data by CSUN authors. They directed us to the methodology developed by library publications data-base provide Elsevier. Results were validated by the Reference and Instruction Librarian.

This methodology was Published: 13 July 2023|Version 1|DOI:10.17632/y2zyy9vwzy.1

The Elsevier 2023 Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) Mapping  has pre-determined research strings for data searches tied to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. We conducted a search of the publications databases using methodology designed by Elsevier to meet the 17 SDG criteria  with a code added specifically to gather data from CSUN authors.

Total number of academic departments between AC 9 (47) and PRE 5 and AC 1 (68) are different which is expected as not every department at CSUN is actively participating in research. The CSU is focused on teaching as opposed to being research driven like other large universities as stated in the CSU Mission Statement.

Dear Chris Bulock,

This is Cassey from the Scopus Second Line Support team and this ticket has been escalated to me for further assistance.

I understand that you would like to search for articles from California State University, Northridge that map to the different SDG goals.

You can do this by copying the SDG query from this page and then add AF-ID(60020975) at the end of the string.

I will forward this matter to our Product team as I see that there should be an easier way to load these articles from the affiliation page.

For updates and developments, please follow the Scopus blog: All Posts | Elsevier Scopus Blog

Feel free to email us again should you notice anything that could improve our users' experience in navigating the website.

Let me know if you have additional concerns.

I’m working with a faculty member who is working on a sustainability report, and they were wondering if there was a way to do a search for all the articles from our institution (AF-ID ( 60020975 )) that map to the various UN Sustainable Development Goals. Right now I can see that article records include the goal. I also see that if I go into the Organizations search and find California State University Northridge, it will give me the list of Sustainable Development Goals 2023 and how many documents are listed from each for my university. However, that is just a viewable list that doesn’t seem to give me any options to download or export. Is there a way to do that? This article on the previous 2020 goals seems to indicate they were incorporated into advanced search, but I’m not seeing that now:
