Does the institution have an ongoing program that offers incentives for academic staff in multiple disciplines or departments to develop new sustainability courses and/or incorporate sustainability into existing courses? :
A brief description of the incentive program(s):
CSUN offers a stipend to faculty participating in a semester-long faculty learning communities or one-time professional development opportunities related to course re-design to include sustainability and climate change/resilience into course curriculum.
CSUN is participating in a California State University (CSU) wide Climate Change and Resilience Faculty Learning Community (FLC) for the first time Spring 2024. This FLC helps faculty members deepen their knowledge about climate change and resilience and learn how to teach these topics in classes across the disciplines. Participants will learn from experts about the science behind climate change, the solutions available to counter it, and the need to incorporate climate justice into their curriculum.
Twenty CSUN instructors including part-time lecturers, new, and senior faculty are meeting with each other twice in person, in addition to five meetings with faculty in their respective disciplines across CSU campuses via Zoom. Faculty are expected to re-design their curriculum to include sustainability and/or climate change and create a video presentation describing their course re-design.
CSUN’s Teaching Climate Change & Resilience FLC is co-sponsored by FacDev, the Institute for Sustainability, and the College of Humanities. The CSU-wide program is offered through the support of Chico State’s Office of the President and College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, and the Office of the Chancellor’s Innovative Teaching & Learning Programs.
This CSU-wide program is developed by Mark Stemen, Professor Geography and Planning at Chico State, in consultation with Zach Justus, in the Office of Faculty Development at Chico State, with support and engagement from the CSU Office of the Chancellor. Previous iterations of this FLC have been featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education (https://www.chronicle.com/article/the-climate-conscious-college?sra=true). The FLC has received the Campus Sustainability Achievement Award (https://today.csuchico.edu/mark-stemen-flc/) by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), and received recognition from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (https://aascu.org/news/eight-aascu-members-honored-with-2023-aascu-excellence-innovation-awards/).
A brief description of the incentives that academic staff who participate in the program(s) receive:
Faculty members who attend all program sessions and submit evidence of course redesign to integrate climate change and resilience into one of their classes earn funding of $1,000.
