Total percentage of students (graduate and undergraduate) that use more sustainable commuting options as their primary means of transportation:
41
A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting, including the timeframe for when the analysis was conducted and how a representative sample was reached, if applicable:
To understand the transportation-related carbon footprints of the CSUN campus, to examine more sustainable options for the future, and to further study CSUN commuting patterns, the first survey was conducted in spring 2010. Based on the feedback from the survey results, CSUN implemented several infrastructure developments that curb the high dependency of automobile use. Those infrastructures include extension of bike lanes, building on-campus student housing units, carpool and ride share programs, electric car charging stations and an on-campus transit center. To understand the effects of those transportation and housing initiatives, a similar survey was conducted in spring 2015 and again in 2017. The survey includes information on the commuting distance, mode choice, transportation preferences and challenges.
