Currently, only students are regularly hired for sustainability related work on campus. They are recruited internally (on campus) with review of ensuring students of color are made aware of the opportunity. This included distributing to all Student Affinity Groups, the Otter Cross Cultural Center, on top of the base requirement of posting on "otterjobs"

We track student experiences in the position in relation to inclusivity and justice, through the exit survey given to all students

Does the sustainability office ensure that sustainability employees complete DEI training?:
Yes

A brief description of the DEI trainings for sustainability employees:
Staff are required to complete DEI training at first hire and at a regular basis (at least annually).

In all student job description, there is a requirement to engage not just in mandatory requirements but also to complete the Diversity Learning Series.

As a combined office we developed social media campaign focused on environmental justice - September 2021
Intersections Working group focused on equity, inclusion and justice formed as part of the President's Sustainability Committee
Sustainability staff support for Unit-level Inclusive Excellence plans
Regional panel on social and environmental justice, with representatives from various ethnicities and backgrounds including indigenous, black, hispanic and API as well as white.

Inclusive Sustainability Student Assistant

Requirements:
With direct supervision and approval from the Sustainability Director, the student should be able to perform the following tasks:
Ability to develop and coordinate web content.
Strong written and oral and communication skills.
Excels in communicating and collaborating within a team to delegate and achieve a shared vision
Able to communicate with professional staff to gather content and information to share.
Experience and ability to curate social media content. Manage Instagram and MyRaft for the OIES office.
Experience with design software such as Canva and Animoto to create posters and outreach materials
Demonstrates passion for social justice and environmental issues
Innovative, go-getter, and independent worker
Ability to attend and facilitate meetings with students, staff, and faculty, while articulating/performing in a professional manner
Accustomed to balancing many priorities and tasks
Comfortability working with other stakeholders and assisting with the integration of sustainability goals into other campus departments
For Spring 2022, this position would also serve as an assistant for the Sustainability Learning Series - Project Implementation component.
Preferred:
Knowledge and understanding of the campus community, have existing relationships with students, staff and faculty engaged with sustainability efforts on campus.
Cultural competency - ability to work effectively and collaborate with diverse student identities. Be willing to explore and learn how your background and identities shape your work style and approach to learning.

Description:
The Office of Inclusive Excellence and Sustainability works to foster a culture of sustainability and inclusivity at CSUMB by; engaging students, staff and faculty in campus sustainability/inclusivity efforts; and providing campus-wide advocacy for sustainability and inclusivity. We provide information about why inclusive sustainability matters and support taking steps to live and work more sustainably and inclusively.
The following items represent the core aspects of the position, however there is room for innovation and ideas which may shift some of the priorities and job duties. All aspects will be overseen and supported by the Sustainability Director.
Collaboration and Partnerships- Work with the Sustainability Director and other staff & student members to collaboratively craft and delegate a vision for the team in an effort to best meet office goals. Initiate collaborations, both within and outside of our direct team to plan and promote events enhancing sustainability and inclusivity.
Outreach and Communication- creates content independently with relevant software applications to be shared on web services and social media that spread news or campaigns of sustainability to the campus community. Manage and craft an engaging social media on Instagram using graphic design skills including but not limited to Canva and Animoto.
Administrative Assistance- Schedule virtual meetings with team members and relevant stakeholders as needed. Ability to work independently.
Work with the Sustainability Director and other staff & student members to maintain and develop the csumb sustainability website. This includes: curating new content, removing old information, ensuring consistent design and accuracy of information.
Develop presentations, animoto videos, instagram posts to share news, events, campaigns supporting sustainable behavior, news and information.
Work with the Campus communications team to share relevant news and information with the broader campus community.
Work with the student team to maintain and curate a relevant and interesting social media presence.
Work with other students in a variety of positions, this might include developing posters or web content to support campaigns or events.
Submit news and information about CSUMB’s sustainability, equity, justice and inclusion achievements to campus communications and to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) newsletter.
