A brief description of how the institution ensures that its lowest-paid workers (including contractors, if applicable) receive sustainable compensation:
Salary schedules are negotiated system-wide by the Chancellor's Office and the appropriate bargaining units. CSUMB adheres to all State of California labor laws, including those related to minimum wage. Employees can avail of undermarket priced housing on campus to augment their disposable income. CSUMB participates annually in an external review of working conditions and compensation via the Monterey County Business Council's Best Places to Work competition.
In addition to the annual salary and a generous benefits package, California State University Employees Union employees at CSU Monterey Bay are eligible for an annual $1500 rural health care stipend.
With regard to contractors working on campus, the Prevailing Wage clause of the CSU Contract General Conditions requires that prevailing wage rates be paid on public works projects.

Data sources
For living wage calculation, we used 3 sources:
GDP deflators from the US Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service (http://www.ers.usda.gov/Data/Macroeconomics/ ) were used to compare base year numbers with current year numbers.
The Economic Policy Institute Basic Family Budget Calculator uses 2007 figures (http://www.epi.org/content/budget_calculator/).
Salinas, CA MSA for One Parent, One Child: $37,276 annual total (i.e., gross)
Santa Cruz-Watsonville, CA MSA for One Parent, One Child: $45,955 annual total (gross)
The Penn State University Living Wage Calculator uses 2008 figures (http://www.livingwage.geog.psu.edu/counties/06053 ).
For Monterey County California for One Adult, One Child: $42,483 is the Annual before tax income required
Methodology to calculate living wage:
1. Source 1: GDP deflators from USDA ERS
2. Source 2: Economic Policy Institute Basic Family Budget Calculator. Use GDP deflator to compare from 2007 (EPI data) to 2010 (CSUMB data). This produces a 2010 equivalent living wage for Santa Cruz and Salinas municipal areas.
3. Source 3: Penn State University Living Wage Calculator. Use GDP deflator to compare from 2008 (Penn State data) to 2010 (CSUMB data). This produces a 2010 equivalent living wage for Monterey County.
4. Average the three EPI Santa Cruz, EPI Salinas & Penn State Monterey County numbers to get an average living wage for this geographical area.
5. To compare employee salaries to living wage: sort by total annual salary per employee, count number below the living wage & above (or equal to) the living wage
