A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:
On November 17, 2023, CSULB President Jane Conoley emailed all students requesting they complete a mandatory commute-related survey that inquired about the method(s) used to commute to campus. The survey is an annual requirement of the South Coast Air Quality Management Districts and of the Climate Leadership Commitment.
The survey was administered through the Qualtrics platform. Of the 40,190 enrolled students, 3093 completed the survey (8% of the university's student population).
The percentage reported represents those individuals whose primary commute mode was more sustainable, including those who came by bus, bike, walking, carpool, skateboard, scooter, or electric, hydrogen, or plug-in hybrid vehicles.

On November 3, 2023, CSULB President Jane Conoley emailed a representative sample group of employees requesting they complete a mandatory commute related survey that inquired about the method(s) used to commute to campus during the week of October 30 - November 3, 2023. The survey is an annual requirement of the South Coast Air Quality Management Districts and of the Climate Leadership Commitment.
The survey was administered through the AQMD-approved platform, LA Metro. A verified representative sample of the 682 (11%) of 5972 total CSULB employees was taken per AQMD rule 2202 guidelines. Primary commute mode was utilized, and mode splits for partial commutes within the same day were not accounted for. Employees who did not respond to the survey were automatically accounted for as "drive alone" per AQMD rule 2202 guidelines.
