A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:

1. Sustainability Ecovillage Development This is a theory-oriented course on sustainable development in West Africa, consisting of a summer study abroad course and an internship in Senegal. Students study and work with Senegalese students on sustainability projects determined by their majors and village priorities. The program includes training sessions in cross-cultural communications and empathy, leadership, and human rights. The program includes visits to Dakar as well as ecological demonstration sites of the African Global Ecovillage Network (GEN Africa) in the beach-side villages of Ngaparou and Pointe Sarene. 2. Australian Tropical Marine Ecology In this summer program, students explore unique ecosystems first hand including coastal forests, mangroves, seagrass meadows, and coral reefs. Students learn how marine organisms interact with the environment and how humans impact ecosystems, particularly along the subtropical coast of eastern Australia and the iconic Great Barrier Reef 3. GEOG 486 - Field Methods in Landscape Analysis This course offers extensive fieldwork opportunities in biogeography, environmental issues, restoration, soil science, native California plants, low-altitude remote sensing, and GPS positional data collection.
