Name of the campaign:
Titan Clean Air Day

A brief description of the campaign:

In October 2019, CSUF Office of Sustainability in partnership with CSUF Parking & Transportation Services held its first Titan Clean Air Day directed at the campus community. The campaign promoted sustainable commuting, shopping local, and planting a home garden. Funded by a microgrant provided by the Coalition for Clean Air, CSUF purchased promotional items such as a bike and succulents to draw attention to air quality issues.

CSUF has continued to hold Titan Clean Air Day in 2020 and 2021 hosting an array of virtual events to educate, empower and engage students, faculty and staff to make a change in reversing the effects of climate change. https://www.cleanairday.org/

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

In 2019, 226 pledges were made by CSUF students, faculty, and staff to clear the air on Titan Clean Air Day. The most popular pledges revolved around cars, with 216 pledging to reduce vehicle emissions. Other notable categories included 180 pledging to switch something out (i.e. lightbulb) and 172 pledging to plant something.

Name of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Cigarette Butt Cleanup

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

On November 13, 2019, the Fresh Air Advocates hosted the Cigarette Butt Cleanup. Students used this event to gather data on the number of people that adhere to the campus' smoke-free policy.

The Fresh Air Advocates organization has been around since 2013, the same year CSUF became a smoke-free campus. Since its inception, the organization has held cigarette butt cleanup events every semester.

The student group has partnered with health organizations, such as the American Lung Association and the Truth Initiative, to advocate for a vape-free and E-cigarette free environment. https://dailytitan.com/news/campus/creating-a-cleaner-campus-one-cigarette-butt-at-a-time/article_aa25c55c-6fb5-5d09-aec3-41d60de6a7c7.html

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

Over 100 students, faculty, staff and clean air advocates participated, picking up cigarette butts and trash around campus. The event began at Titan Walk where groups were then sent to different parts of campus from Visual Arts, Titan Student Union, Pollak Library, and Mihaylo Hall. In total, about 6,000 cigarette butts and 9 pounds of trash were picked up.

Once collected, CSUF then packaged and shipped the cigarette butts to the company TerraCycle. The collected butts were prepared for processing where the residual tobacco and paper were separated out and composted. The filter which was composed of white synthetic fiber was cleaned, melted, and pelletized using a method called extrusion. The cellulose acetate powder was used in the manufacturing of recycled plastic lumber. The lumber was used to build park benches, picnic tables and more. https://www.terracycle.com/en-US/brigades/cigarette-waste-recycling
