Part 1. Institutional sustainability learning outcomes

Has the institution adopted one or more sustainability learning outcomes that apply to the entire student body or, at minimum, to the institution's predominant student body?:
Yes

Which of the following best describes the sustainability learning outcomes?:
Sustainability-focused

A list of the institution level sustainability learning outcomes:
(4) Exemplifying equity, ethics, and engagement: Students will form and effectively communicate their own evidence-based and reasoned views on public issues, interact with others to address SOCIAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC challenges, apply knowledge of diversity and cultural competencies to promote equity and social justice in the classroom and the community, value the complexity of ethical decision making in a diverse society, acknowledge the importance of standards in academic and professional integrity, and demonstrate honesty, tolerance, and civility in social and academic interactions. Building upon this at the graduate level, students will apply these values in the creation of scholarly and/or aesthetic works that enrich the human experience.

Part 2. Program-level sustainability learning outcomes

Total number of graduates from degree programs:
5,882

Number of graduates from degree programs that require an understanding of the concept of sustainability:
2,713

A brief description of how the figure above was determined:
All program-level student learning outcomes were investigated for explicit sustainability themes. This included program learning outcomes for Bachelor's, Master's, Credential, Pre-Professional, Minors, and Doctoral degree programs offered at Fresno State. Programs that qualify for this credit include: programs considered sustainability-focused (identified in AC-3 and AC-4); programs with explicit sustainability-focused learning outcomes published on Fresno State's website for Student Outcomes Assessment Plans (SOAPs); and programs that require a sustainability-focused course (identified in AC-1) in order to complete degree requirements. Qualified programs were then assessed for the number of graduates in a given year to be reported as a percentage of the total number of graduates from Fresno State. We chose to look at the 2021-2022 academic year since this corresponds to the time period used for AC-1 and is relatively recent. Number of graduates was obtained from our Office of Institutional Effectiveness website on 11/30/23.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
Our Office of Institutional Effectiveness only tracks the number of graduates based on their primary major, so we are undercounting the number of students who graduate with an understanding of sustainability because these numbers do not include Minors or Certificates. The data dashboard used for this category did not include numbers for certain majors (for unknown reasons), so the numbers reported here represent a minimum amount of graduates with sustainability literacy.
