A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
Procurement tags all campus assets with a barcode, and have a tag in/tag out procedure for registering any electronics that are purchased on campus. This prevents users from disposing electronics irresponsibly, as all assets that are to be disposed must be processed through Procurement which can then send waste materials to an approved recycler.
A brief description of how the institution safely disposes of hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
Approved commercial recycler (Recycle International) handles all campus electronic waste as well as CD's/DVD's for recycling.
Another approved commercial recycler (North Star) handles all battery recycling and chemical recycling collected on campus. There are battery recycling bins at several offices and main campus buildings (front offices) available for staff to utilize. The Office of Sustainability also advertises free battery collection buckets to any offices that request them, in addition to supporting a network of public battery locations in most major campus buildings. All staff are directed us put used batteries into the collection bucket and call the Zero Waste Coordinator for pick-up. From there, its transferred to EHOS for recycling. EHOS also works with all staff to do pick-ups of any chemical or other hazardous material.

CSUDH requires all laboratories to have an up-to-date inventory of their chemicals using the online RSS system (from the Chancellor's Office). This enables users to collaborate with other labs to see if excess non-controlled chemicals might be available prior to purchasing any additional supplies.

All electronic waste collected by the campus is sent to Recycle International (32331 Durfee Ave, El Monte CA) for refurbishment and/or responsible recycling. Staff and students are directed to contact Procurement to arrange pick-up of waste electronic materials for campus assets, and e-waste is collected regularly at the last Farmers Market of each semester by the Office of Sustainability.
