Part 2. Reduction in source energy use per unit of floor area

Baseline year energy consumption

STARS 2.2 requires electricity data in kilowatt-hours (kWh). If a baseline has already been established in a previous version of STARS and the institution wishes to continue using it, the electricity data must be re-entered in kWh. To convert existing electricity figures from MMBtu to kWh, simply multiply by 293.07107 MMBtu/kWh.

Electricity use, baseline year (report kWh):
kWh MMBtu
Imported electricity 16,961,920 Kilowatt-hours 57,874.07 MMBtu
Electricity from on-site, non-combustion facilities/devices (e.g., renewable energy systems) 0 Kilowatt-hours 0 MMBtu

Stationary fuels and thermal energy, baseline year (report MMBtu):
MMBtu
Stationary fuels used on-site to generate electricity and/or thermal energy 98,760.70 MMBtu
Imported steam, hot water, and/or chilled water 0 MMBtu

Total site energy consumption, baseline year:
156,634.77 MMBtu

Baseline year building space

Gross floor area of building space, baseline year:
1,386,070 Gross square feet

Baseline period

Start and end dates of the baseline year (or 3-year period):
Start date End date
Baseline period Jan. 1, 2018 Dec. 31, 2018

A brief description of when and why the energy consumption baseline was adopted:
This baseline is when AASHE STARS reporting began (also before adoption of the Clean Energy Optimization Pilot program with Southern California Edison/most aggressive greenhouse gas reduction efforts began).

Source energy

Source-site ratio for imported electricity:
3

Total energy consumption per unit of floor area:
Site energy Source energy
Performance year 0.06 MMBtu per square foot 0.13 MMBtu per square foot
Baseline year 0.11 MMBtu per square foot 0.20 MMBtu per square foot

Metric used in scoring for Part 2

Percentage reduction in total source energy consumption per unit of floor area from baseline:
35.97

Optional Fields

Documentation to support the performance year energy consumption figures reported above:
A brief description of the institution's initiatives to shift individual attitudes and practices in regard to energy efficiency:
Energy efficiency behaviors are regularly included in sustainability outreach campaigns and communications. A few specific examples from the 2022 calendar year include:

-Central Plant Open House Tours during October Sustainability Month to help campus users gain a better appreciation of campus energy use as well as regular class tours of the Central Plant tunnels upon request by faculty.
-In fall 2022, sent out a campus-wide "Shut the Door" reminder to encourage users to keep doors closed to preserve HVAC set temperature.

A brief description of energy use standards and controls employed by the institution:
LED lighting with Enlighted occupancy sensors that allow occupancy/vacancy sensing and integrated controls are the campus standard for lighting retrofits and installation.

Central Plant also has automated building controls for HVAC delivery, Pelican thermostats, and other technology to ensure ongoing monitoring and commissioning.

A brief description of Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting and other energy-efficient lighting strategies employed by the institution:
Enlighted with LED lighting technologies are the campus-wide standard and are installed in all retrofitted classrooms and new construction.

The campus also participated in a California Energy Commission case-study which provided funding to completely retrofit two major campus buildings (Welch Hall and the LaCorte Hall building) with all LED lighting.

A brief description of passive solar heating, geothermal systems, and related strategies employed by the institution:
N/A

A brief description of co-generation employed by the institution:
N/A

A brief description of the institution's initiatives to replace energy-consuming appliances, equipment, and systems with high efficiency alternatives:
CSUDH replaced natural gas absorption chillers with electric chillers and one large natural gas boiler with eight small condensing staged boilers in May 2019. While the energy savings were significant (57% reduction in natural gas), there was also a significant cooling tower water savings from the reduced thermal load resulting in 2.8 million gallons per year in water savings.

CSUDH is one of the participants in the Clean Energy Optimization Pilot, which provides funding for all behind-the-meter efforts to reduce energy consumption/greenhouse gas.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
CSUDH replaced natural gas absorption chillers with electric chillers and one large natural gas boiler with eight small condensing staged boilers in 2019 and was able to achieve a 57% reduction in natural gas. This innovative project earned a statewide best practice award in Energy Demand at the CA Higher Ed Sustainability Conference.
