Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Pop Up Thrift Initiative
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Piloted during the pandemic, the Office of Sustainability's Pop Up Thrift initiative collects donated items, stores them temporarily, and then re-distributes those items for free to Toros. This is in support of not just the zero waste efforts on campus, but to help provide much needed resources to in-need students.
The initiative has expanded to include annual Housing move-in/move-out dates, whereby outgoing residents can donate their household items, clothing, etc. while moving out and incoming residents can "shop" for free when moving in to furnish their units.
There is also an ongoing office supply and clothing Pop Up Thrift program where all Toros can donate items (school/office supplies, clothing, electronics, etc.) at the end of the semester, and items are re-distributed to the campus at the first Farmers Market of the semester. At the Farmers Market the Office of Sustainability displays all goods and users can come and take them for free.
This creates cyclical flows of materials and donated goods/items so that all campus users can thrift locally instead for free instead of purchasing new goods and materials.
