A brief description of the institution’s green event certification program, including the specific components selected above:

The Green Event Certification program provides voluntary self-registration of events that adopt at least 5 points worth of green event practices. The checklist is attached, but it provides points for waste diversion, sustainable foods and purchasing, carbon offsets and alternative transportation for guests, and sustainable procurement. Events that are successful in achieving at least 5 points will automatically receive the appropriate event logo in their registration survey (i.e. bronze, silver, gold, or platinum level green event) to use in marketing.

Categories and point options are as follows:

Reduce Event Waste:
-Request mixed recycling and/or organics recycling at your event
-Donate leftover food to the Food Recovery Network chapter on campus.

Support Sustainable Foods:
-Plan menus using in-season, fresh, local, organic produce.
-Request food and beverage items that are Fair Trade Certified.
-Select vegetarian and vegan food options to reduce greenhouse gases.
-Request that campus catering serve locally farmed food from the CSUDH Campus Urban Farm and/or request food from the Farm directly.

Sustainable Supplies:
-Ban styrofoam plateware and products at the event
-Use reusable plateware and serviceware
-Serve water and beverages from a dispenser
-Go paperless
-Give attendees the option to refuse, recycle, or return unwanted copies of handouts.
-Print double sided
-For giveaways, give out sustainability-sourced products, reusable items, and/or prizes that are experienced-based instead of physical.

Support Attendees:
-Purchase carbon offsets
-Provide alternative transportation information to guests

Innovation Credit:
-Use decorations that recycle or re-purpose waste
-Come up with your own creative way of going green.
