This Way To Sustainability Conference 2019-2021: This Way To Sustainability (TWTS) Conference is a nationally recognized, student-run conference focusing on challenges, ideas, solutions and resiliency in planning our sustainable future. The conference hosts 1,400 participants each year with a variety of respected students and professionals speaking on the many aspects of sustainability. The goal of the conference is to educate students, staff, faculty, and community members; providing attendees an opportunity to network, discuss, and become more aware of pertinent environmental and social issues we all face. The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) released its 2021 Sustainable Campus Index—a report recognizing top-performing colleges and universities in the US and Canada in 17 sustainability impact areas—and ranked Chico State at No. 5 in the Master’s Institutions category, up three spots from 2020.

CSU, Chico was the first of the 23 CSU campuses to establish a sustainability office and full-time sustainability officer positions, the first to sign the ACUPCC and to add sustainability to the Campus Strategic Plan as a priority. Given the University's strong early commitments and continued follow-through it has maintained a position of leadership within the system for over a decade and has taken many opportunities to mentor and model best practices for the 22 other CSUs and other schools across California and beyond. In particular, CSU, Chico hosted CSU system-wide sustainability summits for sustainability staff from across the system within the past 3 years.
