Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
StormReady Designation
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In 2019, CSU Channel Islands was recognized by the National Weather Services as a designated StormReady Campus. The StormReady designation acknowledges campuses and communities that are better prepared to save lives and respond to severe weather events through advanced planning, education and awareness. As the impacts of climate change begin to become apparent through changing weather patterns and an increase in severe storm events, CSU Channel Islands felt it was important to bolster the university's emergency response programs to ensure we can keep the campus community safe during these events. The university community has been impacted by several climate-driven events in recent years, including wildfires, droughts, heavy rain events, and weather-related power shutdowns. All of these events drive home the reality of climate change and emphasize the importance of not only reducing greenhouse gas emissions to slow climate change, but also preparing our community to adapt and respond to the impacts that we are too late to prevent.
