The Civil Engineering Department created a course for students to better understand the University's current Climate Action Plan. The students propose projects designed to reduce carbon emissions while also considering potential outcomes for society.

In Sustainable Buildings and Infrastructure students learn about sustainable practices, evaluation methodologies, rating systems, building codes, and policies. Specific topics covered include: greenhouse gas emissions, carbon footprint, embodied energy, life cycle analysis, life cycle cost analysis, product certification programs and green rating systems, in particular: LEED, Greenroads and Envision. They get a look at LEED credits for each project under construction on campus.

The Sustainable Agriculture Training program (SAT), a partnership between Cal Poly Pomona and Archi’s Institute of Sustainable Agriculture, covers hydroponics, soil biology and greenhouse management. In addition, the program emphasizes problem-solving, leadership, and business plan development and implementation.

The University recently completed Project Blue restored the Kellogg Creek which was impeded and hidden by non-native overgrown foliage. The landscape project created an outdoor classroom with native trees and plants and is now used as a living laboratory to collect water samples and explore a riparian habitat for Cal Poly students as well as local K-12 students.
