The primary function of the Sustainability Advisory Committee is to review and recommend measures related to University sustainability policies and practices dealing with natural resource utilization, land use, and physical projects. The committee is advisory and reports to the vice president of Administration & Finance.

The Academic Senate Sustainability Committee informs and supports the activities of other campus groups and committees whose scope encompasses environmental responsibility. This committee makes recommendations to the Academic Senate to foster development and implementation of the Climate Action Plan, including integration of sustainability into University curriculum and programs.

The Facilities Energy, Utilities, and Sustainability organization is dedicated to responsible management of the natural resources needed to assure the continued efficient operations of the Cal Poly campus. Electricity, natural gas, water, and various other resources are critical to operating a successful university; Cal Poly is an award winning leader in sustainability because we manage those resources using sustainability as a driving force in campus planning and operations.

Every year, the Cal Poly Energy, Utilities, and Sustainability team in partnership with the Sustainability Advisory Committee and Academic Senate Sustainability Committee convenes a campus wide Sustainability Charrette to shape Cal Poly’s role in Sustainability and Climate Change. The all-day event brings together over 100 faculty, staff, students, administrators, industry partners, and community leaders using Liberating Structures to work through timely challenges for sustainability opportunities on campus.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, research, development, implementation, and oversight of: energy and water conservation projects; recycling and waste reduction programs; educational outreach and behavioral change initiatives; utility procurement, invoice processing, recharge billing, and utility budget forecasting and planning; greenhouse gas tracking and reporting; energy, utility, sustainability, and greenhouse gas master planning; climate action planning; development of on-site and renewable energy generation systems; sustainability rating and certification of buildings and/or the campus; and public relations, publicity, and marketing of these efforts. This position will interface with utility vendors, consultants, contractors, campus auxiliary organizations, students, faculty, staff, and administrators, and will provide information to the campus community and general public by telephone, email, written report, and in person.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, research, development, implementation, and oversight of: sustainability and greenhouse gas tracking, reporting, and master planning; climate action planning; educational outreach and behavioral change initiatives; infusion of sustainability into curriculum and academic programs; faculty, staff and student stakeholder engagement; energy and water conservation programs; recycling and waste reduction programs; sustainability rating and certification of buildings and/or the campus; sustainability event planning and coordination; support of class projects and sustainability club activities; and public relations, publicity, and marketing of these efforts.
