THE Impact Rankings were introduced by The Times Higher Education (THE) in 2018/19. The purpose of this new rating is to record universities' impact on society based on the institution's success in accomplishing the United Nations seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The United Nations has set these 17 SDGs in order to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all by 2030. The goals address global changes such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace, and justice. The goal of this new rating, according to the Times Higher Education (THE), is to "provide a showcase for the work being delivered by universities in our communities, as well as an opportunity to shine a light on institutional excellence."
In 2019/20, CU applied for the Overall THE institution Impact Rankings. To apply for an overall rank, an institution must provide data for at least four of the seventeen SDGs, with "SDG 17 Partnership for the Goals" being mandatory. A proposal for any extra three SDGs can subsequently be submitted to get an overall impact rank. NUI Galway submitted data for the mandatory "SDG 17 Partnership for the Goals" and six extra SDGs in 2019/20. The Times Higher then publishes the results for the universities' top four SDGs.
