The Butler University Sustainability Council is comprised of students, faculty, and staff. The council is divided into topical working groups, chaired by staff or faculty: Energy and Water; Purchasing, Food, and Waste; Transportation, Grounds, and Facilities; and Education and Research. Each working group meets regularly to assess progress toward our Climate Action Plan goals within their areas of focus. The groups report their activities to the Sustainability Coordinator.

The Center for Urban Ecology (CUE) is an academic center at Butler University dedicated to the science of urban ecology since 2004. In the liberal arts tradition, we view urban ecology as inherently interdisciplinary and aspire to engage disciplines across Butler’s campus—from biology to business and beyond—in gaining a fundamental understanding of urban ecology for a more sustainable society.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:
All new construction has received LEED Gold certification. A public-private partnership between Butler and Indianapolis allowed for a large green infrastructure project to address stormwater through permeable bike lanes and rain gardens on the northeast section of campus. Butler has started composting all pre-consumer food waste from the dining halls (approximately 1,500 pounds per week). Butler has instituted an LED purchasing policy--all new and replaced lights are LED. Butler has submetered all of its buildings. Butler has placed outdoor recycling bins across campus.
