A brief description of the institution’s professional development opportunities on sustainability in the curriculum:
Each year, the Bucknell Center for Sustainability & the Environment (BSCE) organizes two regional symposia for Bucknell students, faculty, and staff as well as external academic staff and other stakeholders. The fall 2022 symposium entitled “The River Symposium” focuses on ecological and riverine sustainability issues, and includes a large poster session featuring student and faculty research from different universities as well as a technical presentation session over the two-day event. The Fall 2022 River Symposium attracted participants from 17 different universities, as well as six state agencies, seven federal agencies, 8 conservancies, and three healthcare organizations. Professional development credits were awarded to attendees from two state organizations: The PA Fish and Boat Commission and PA Department of Environmental Protection and two federal agencies: The U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Forest Service.

The Sustainability Symposium is held each spring, typically around the date of Earth Day. The 9th Sustainability Symposium, held in the spring of 2022 had 70 presenters representing 140 authors from 12 different universities, organizations, and government agencies.

Both symposia are marketed regionally through social media, newsletters, websites, and direct email. The symposia are also made accessible to all by remaining free of charge to everyone, and open to the general public. Both symposia also seek diversity by specifically inviting underrepresented groups to participate, such as including Native American representatives as keynote speakers for the River Symposium and diverse speakers for the Sustainability Symposium.
