Partnering With Goldman Sachs to Explore the Potential of A Nature Based Solution For Carbon Neutrality in West Africa
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Bucknell began a partnership with Goldman Sachs to explore the creation of high-quality verifiable carbon credit projects in West Africa. The project will provide Bucknell students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to participate in an international nature-based solution for climate change. Innovated at Bucknell, the project supply-side will include bamboo value chain cultivated in targeted African land and harvested over a 7-year cycle for building and furniture material as nature-based carbon storage. The demand side will include USA-based large energy users starting with the Smart Energy Decisions Community. Projects are designed to encapsulate environmental, social, and governance impact investments that include equity, inclusion, and justice. It will create employment opportunities for the Africans through agriculture and farming as well as foreign exchange through the manufacturing of building materials and other plastic and cement replacement materials. Bucknell University is leveraging its presence in Ghana as the basis for this innovation through the Global Education Office while hoping to obtain carbon credits to help in the 2030 carbon neutrality goal. Smart Energy Decision Community members will have the opportunity to be off-takers of the high-quality verifiable carbon credits, invest in the project on an ESG impact basis, and/or donate to the project on a global citizen corporate social responsibility basis (CSR).
