A brief description of the institution’s LGBTQ-inclusive policies, programs and practices:

At the University level, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Gender Expression are included in our institution’s non-discrimination policy and stated commitment to diversity. We have edited policies ensuring transgender members of the Bucknell community and visitors to campus have access to gendered spaces that affirm their gender identity. Additionally, our institution’s Mission Statement was recently amended from stating “educating men and women” to “educating students” to be trans inclusive.

Students, faculty and staff are afforded the ability to enter their affirming name within University systems for broad use, except when legal name is absolutely necessary. For students, we share affirming name on classroom and housing rosters, publications, and diplomas.

Bucknell provides incoming first-year students with an opportunity to provide their gender identity through the Common Application. We use the gender identity marker when completing housing assignments, deferring only to sex when gender identity has not been submitted. For students who express concerns being housed based on gender identity, or those who do not identify with a binary gender identity, we have a gender-accessible housing available for all class years. Upper-class students also have a gender inclusive housing option, affording them the opportunity to live in affinity or apartment-style housing with roommates of any gender identity.

The Office of LGBTQ Resources supports students and serves as an institutional resource to ensure the LGBTQ student community is integrated fully into the life of the institution. Bucknell has a student organization, the Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA), whose mission is to address student social and cultural needs and a living learning community, Fran’s House, dedicated to providing a safe living environment, supplemented with cultural development opportunities. Between these three institutional entities, Bucknell holds programs throughout the year to address the various needs of these communities, including a Coming Out celebration, Trans Day of Remembrance recognition, and Pride celebration.
