A brief description of the carbon sinks, including vendor, project source, verification program and contract timeframes (as applicable):

Bryn Mawr College has partnered with the Pennsylvania Environmental Commission, The Altoona Water Authority, and Green Forests works to undertake a carbon offset project. The offset project consists of planting 98,000 trees on legacy mine lands that are currently devoid of trees after being “restored” through compaction and non – native grass plantings. The baseline scenario has been a monoculture of non-native grasses for decades after the “restoration”. In the initial growing season of the planting the area has be restored to native grasses among the seedlings. The carbon sequestered the initial year of tree growth has been estimated by a third party (Stone House Group) using the I-tree calculator based on the number, species and location of the trees planted. The greenhouse gas emissions cause by the site preparation were calculated based on the Climate Action Reserve U.S. Forest protocol and deducted from the estimated amount of carbon sequestered. The land and trees included in the offset project are protected and the rights to count the carbon are exclusive to Bryn Mawr College through an agreement with the Altoona Water Authority. The College is working with the Second Nature Carbon Offset Network to finalize our protocol.
