Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Bryn Mawr College- Pennsylvania Environmental Council Partnership
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Bryn Mawr College has partnered with the Pennsylvania Environmental Commission (PEC) to plant up to 400,000 trees on legacy mine lands in Pennsylvania as part of their existing reforestation program. PEC is a well-respected environmental advocacy group that has been working in Pennsylvania for over 50 years. The PEC reforestation program is part of the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative (ARRI), a regional initiative including the Department of Interior and six coal-impacted states to restore healthy, productive forests on coal mined lands using the Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA).
The initial planting in partnership with the Altoona Water Authority in central Pennsylvania occurred in the spring of 2022. While there will be multiple partners in this project Bryn Mawr College will have the exclusive right to any carbon credits generated from this planting. Additional project details are as follows:
o The project covers approximately 140 acres over two sites on the property
o Approximately 89,000 trees have been planted including a diversity of native tree species.
o Additional partners include the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Green Forest Works and the Susquehanna River Basin Commission.
o In addition to carbon sequestration, this project will have restorative benefits including improved water quality for the Altoona community and the Chesapeake Bay water shed, reduced erosion, and the creation of wildlife habitat to promote biodiversity.
o Bryn Mawr Students, faculty and Staff visited the site to plant trees on April 8, 2022 as part of their course work.
The college is working with Second Nature to finalize a peer reviewed protocol
