Sustainability Committee

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:

Bryant University established the Sustainability Committee in 2008. The committee represents a cross section of faculty, staff and students. Initiatives developed by the committee are sent to the President and his cabinet for review and approval. Reference to the work by the Sustainability Committee will be found throughout this submittal.

Walking Trails

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:

Bryant University has developed walking trails through wooded parts of campus that provide faculty, students and staff the opportunity to enjoy exercise outdoors. We have added interactive signage to the trails to highlight native species of animals and plants that live in our area.

The trails are used for academic programs, as well. Vernal pools and ponds are studied in our Environmental Science curriculum as part of an interactive teaching method.

The goal of the University is to reduce our carbon footprint by maintaining healthy trees across campus. Future building plans all have designated wetlands identified and environmental studies will be conducted.

Net Metering Credits

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:

Bryant University has invested in off-site solar farms in three locations throughout Rhode Island. Our investment in these farms provides alternative energy to the electrical grid serving Rhode Island without removing trees for installation on our campus. Bryant is one of multiple private colleges and universities in Rhode Island that has invested in the solar farms, each taking a majority share of a solar farm consumption. Bryant University is committed to a share of up to 80% of total consumption of the university from the Rhode Island solar farm production.
