Part 2. Reduction in source energy use per unit of floor area

Baseline year energy consumption

STARS 2.2 requires electricity data in kilowatt-hours (kWh). If a baseline has already been established in a previous version of STARS and the institution wishes to continue using it, the electricity data must be re-entered in kWh. To convert existing electricity figures from MMBtu to kWh, simply multiply by 293.07107 MMBtu/kWh.

Electricity use, baseline year (report kWh):
kWh MMBtu
Imported electricity 16,994,828 Kilowatt-hours 57,986.35 MMBtu
Electricity from on-site, non-combustion facilities/devices (e.g., renewable energy systems) 0 Kilowatt-hours 0 MMBtu

Stationary fuels and thermal energy, baseline year (report MMBtu):
MMBtu
Stationary fuels used on-site to generate electricity and/or thermal energy 72,332.99 MMBtu
Imported steam, hot water, and/or chilled water 0 MMBtu

Total site energy consumption, baseline year:
130,319.35 MMBtu

Baseline year building space

Gross floor area of building space, baseline year:
1,353,888 Gross square feet

Baseline period

Start and end dates of the baseline year (or 3-year period):
Start date End date
Baseline period July 1, 2012 June 30, 2013

A brief description of when and why the energy consumption baseline was adopted:
2013 was established as the energy consumption baseline because this the most recent year that we have all of the correct data to draw upon.

Source energy

Source-site ratio for imported electricity:
3

Total energy consumption per unit of floor area:
Site energy Source energy
Performance year 0.08 MMBtu per square foot 0.16 MMBtu per square foot
Baseline year 0.10 MMBtu per square foot 0.18 MMBtu per square foot

Metric used in scoring for Part 2

Percentage reduction in total source energy consumption per unit of floor area from baseline:
13.73

Optional Fields

Documentation to support the performance year energy consumption figures reported above:
---

A brief description of the institution's initiatives to shift individual attitudes and practices in regard to energy efficiency:
Emails to the campus community during winter break to shut off lights, turn down thermostats.
Facilities staff meets with Residence Life staff and resident assistants to educate students about energy conservation (i.e. shut off lights, turn down thermostats).

A brief description of energy use standards and controls employed by the institution:
90% of production is by means of condensing boilers, under the control of the campus BAS. The campus BAS allows for complex clock routines and changes in schedule to accommodate the academic calendar. The system has approximately 8,500 control points. Among other functions, it is programmed to automatically reset temperature to save energy during night setbacks and unoccupied periods. When possible the system will shut down energy consuming equipment entirely when buildings are unoccupied.

A brief description of Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting and other energy-efficient lighting strategies employed by the institution:
85% of all lighting on campus has been changed to LED or energy-efficient lighting. Two of the campuses largest buildings have been changed to all LED lighting, Bello library and the Unistructure. LED lighting is being used extensively in exit signs throughout campus, and all parking lot lighting is LED. We are currently in a program of replacing halogen PAR lamps used in recessed fixtures with new LED lamps throughout campus in dining facilities, elevators, and other public spaces. Any new additions or renovated spaces utilize all new LED fixtures with occupancy sensors. Ongoing operations project of replacing exterior metal halide floodlights with LED type.

A brief description of passive solar heating, geothermal systems, and related strategies employed by the institution:
Geothermal systems exist in two dormitories and in the Callahan House Presidential Residence.

A brief description of co-generation employed by the institution:
None

A brief description of the institution's initiatives to replace energy-consuming appliances, equipment, and systems with high efficiency alternatives:
Project in development to replace townhouses C-G from electric to natural gas. Any new appliances must be Energy Star certified. Any new/replacement condensing equipment has a higher SEER rating.
