A brief description of the themed semester, year, or first-year experience:
The Early College on the BCC Campus theme for this year is, “How can we sustain life in Brunswick County?” At the beginning of the year, all freshmen students brainstormed what we need in order to sustain life. They also brainstormed the problems in Brunswick County that are detracting from the sustainability of life. These problems included: People in Brunswick County are hungry, People in Brunswick County are obese, People in Brunswick County do not have access to medical care, The air in Brunswick County is not clean, People in Brunswick County produce too much waste, and others. Students chose which problem most interested them. In groups of four to six, students focused on a very specific aspect of their problem that they could solve. Students wrote a research paper about how this problem affects another country.
