A brief description of each sustainability office:
Brock University has an Environmental Sustainability Research Centre (ESRC) that focuses on being a transformative and creative transdisciplinary community dedicated to research and education to advance environmental sustainability locally and globally. In working towards this mission, the ESRC:
- Encourages research excellence in environmental sustainability by faculty, librarians, and
students;
- Enables enriching educational experiences in environmental sustainability;
- Engages in knowledge mobilization and foster knowledge impacts.
In addition to the ESRC, Brock also had a Charter Agreement between Facilities Management and the ESRC. This initiative bridged the operating and academic constituents concerned with Sustainability at Brock. The Brock University Project Charter was set to last five years. Some of the more specific targets the two sides are working toward were:
- Conduct a needs assessment within the first year of operation, which identifies priorities, proposed activities and objectives to be achieved with the first five years
- Hold public events each year pertaining to knowledge mobilization and/or community
engagement
- Engage graduate and undergraduate students in campus sustainability issues and initiatives
through co-operative education, course projects, and independent research (i.e.
MRP/thesis); initiate research projects by Faculty
- Explore and pursue mutually beneficial opportunities of shared interest such as grant proposals, community forums, etc.
- Promote Sustainability at Brock within the greater Brock University community and develop networks locally, nationally and internationally

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:
Unlike other universities, Brock, does not have an office specifically dedicated to operational sustainability. In winter 2018, the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre and Facilities Management at Brock University created a partnership (Brock University Project Charter) to focus on and advance Sustainability at Brock. This initiative uniquely bridged the operating and academic constituents concerned with Sustainability at Brock. It provided real benefits to the Brock University community by leveraging the resources (both financial and in-kind), capacities, and talents of both internal units to address environmental sustainability issues and initiatives on campus.
The Brock University Project Charter was set to last five years (2018-2023). Some of the more specific targets the two sides were working toward included:
- Conducting a needs assessment to identify priorities, proposed activities and objectives to be achieved.
- Holding public events each year pertaining to knowledge mobilization and/or community engagement.
- Engaging graduate and undergraduate students in campus sustainability issues and initiatives through co-operative education, course projects, and independent research (i.e. MRP/thesis); initiate research projects by Faculty.
- Exploring and pursuing mutually beneficial opportunities of shared interest such as grant proposals, community forums, etc.
- Promoting Sustainability at Brock within the greater Brock University community and develop networks locally, nationally and internationally.
