Performance and baseline periods

Start and end dates of the performance year and baseline year (or three-year periods):
Performance year Baseline year
Start date Jan. 1, 2022 Jan. 1, 2013
End date Dec. 31, 2022 Dec. 31, 2013

A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:
Brock University has elected to utilize the 2013 benchmark for its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory. The 2013 baseline year was the first year with reliable and accurate information in terms of GHG reporting for Brock. Furthermore, in 2012 Brock had undergone a large expansion as well as implemented operational changes through the construction of the Cairns’ Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex. The Cairns’ Complex added an additional 169,000 sq. Ft. 4 story plus basement building to the Brock campus. Thus, the period after construction of the Cairns Complex represents a stable point in campus development. Being a young university, 1990 did not appropriately reflect Brock’s operations and development. Therefore, to accurately represent improvements in GHG emissions and energy consumption, the 2013 baseline was adopted to provide the most accurate benchmark.

Part 1. Reduction in GHG emissions per person

Weighted campus users

Figures needed to determine “Weighted Campus Users”:
Performance year Baseline year
Number of students resident on-site 2,589 2,331
Number of employees resident on-site 0 0
Number of other individuals resident on-site 0 0
Total full-time equivalent student enrollment 16,680 16,151
Full-time equivalent of employees 2,316.76 1,428
Full-time equivalent of students enrolled exclusively in distance education 179 30
Weighted Campus Users 14,760.57 13,744.50

Metrics used in scoring for Part 1

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user 1.55 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 1.85 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Percentage reduction in adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user from baseline:
16.47

Part 2. GHG emissions per unit of floor area

Performance year floor area

Gross floor area of building space, performance year:
278,508.99 Gross square meters

Floor area of energy intensive building space, performance year:
Floor area
Laboratory space 23,598.56 Square meters
Healthcare space 1,252.83 Square meters
Other energy intensive space 9,761.95 Square meters

EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
337,973.57 Gross square meters

Metric used in scoring for Part 2

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per unit of EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
0.07 MtCO2e per square meter

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:
Brock University published an updated Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan (ECDM) in 2019. Brock’s ECDM plan outlines multiple GHG reduction measures, which include Technical, Behavioral, and Organizational approaches.

Brock Recently received approximately 2.9 million dollars from the Low Carbon Economy Fund presented by Environment and Climate Change Canada. This funding will support the universities District Energy System Electrification Project. This project will reduce emissions through retrofits that will increase Brock University’s reliance on grid electricity and reduce its dependence on natural gas. The project will lead to fewer greenhouse gas emissions and increased energy savings. Brock University will see a cumulative reduction of about 13,700 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030—equivalent to the energy use of over 3,200 homes for one year.
