A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability:
A unique partnership formally connects Brock University to the Lincoln community, which provides real benefits by leveraging the resources, capacities and talents of both communities. Among some of the more specific targets of this multi-year partnership, the two sides are working toward:
- Conducting a needs assessment within the first year of operations identifying priorities, proposed activities and objectives to be achieved within the first five years
- Holding public events each year pertaining to knowledge mobilization and community engagement
- Engaging graduate and undergraduate students in co-operative education, course projects and independent research projects
- Initiating research projects by Brock faculty
- Exploring and pursuing mutually beneficial opportunities of shared interest such as grant proposals and community forums
- Promoting the Living Lab locally and develop networks nationally and internationally
- Supporting Lincoln in following other national or international initiatives that can help promote community sustainability and are in line with the spirit of the Living Lab

A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability (2nd partnership):
Building resilience into sustainable community development is the aim of this five-year partnership involving the Town of Lincoln, Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, and the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre. The landmark Prudhomme’s development site in the Town of Lincoln is the primary focus of the partnership. It is intended to “set out a new urban vision, urban design and public realm guidelines, updated land-use designations, servicing strategies, transportation requirements and implementation policies”. Led by the Resilience Collaborative, the partners will collaborate to provide critical insights about resilience from theoretical and on-the ground experiences and experiment with novel approaches to build resilience into development initiatives.

The WWF-Canada – Brock Partnership for Freshwater Resilience is designed to advance the understanding of how to build resilience in Canada in the face of increasing threats to freshwater and increasing impacts from climate change on these resources. The Partnership brings together Brock’s Environmental Sustainability Research Centre with the Freshwater Division of WWF-Canada to leverage their complimentary expertise in governance and policy, research and practice.

Excellence in Environmental Stewardship Initiative:
The MOU calls for creating an Excellence in Environmental Stewardship Initiative (EESI) that uses the expertise and resources of both organizations to increase environmental stewardship through public events and, in the case of students, through co-op education opportunities, course work and research.

Niagara Climate Change Action Network (NCCAC):
Brock University along with 3 other local organizations, Niagara Region, Niagara College, and the Niagara Peninsula conservation authority, worked together to establish the NCCAC. Over 50 individuals from various sectors including energy, agriculture, development and engineering attended the Inaugural meeting for this partnership held in December 2022. The focus of the NCCAC is on accelerating climate change action in Niagara by integrating the efforts of the Region, local area municipalities, local utilities, businesses, industries, educational institutions, Indigenous organizations, environmental groups and other interested parties working towards climate change action, energy performance and sustainable development. This is to ultimately foster positive economic, environmental, social, and cultural outcomes and gain real traction to integrate sustainability throughout the Niagara Region.
