1st campaign

Name of the campaign:
Clean-Up(s)

A brief description of the campaign:
Brock students helped clean up the area behind Quarry View Residence, as part of the first on Campus Clean-Up event in 2023. Volunteer students demonstrated their commitment to environmental stewardship by collecting garbage and recycling around the area. Picking up waste makes a difference throughout the Brock community and creates positive impacts for the environment. Prior to this event, during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, Brock managed to host a virtual Clean-Up by teaming up with Niagara College. Brock published its own toolkit for Community Clean-Ups on the Sustainability at Brock website, which was used to help individuals facilitate a Clean-up event in their own communities. While away from the Brock Campus due to social distancing regulations, positive environmental actions were still able to flourish. This event involved students from the Niagara region, Ottawa and even New Delhi (India).

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
Picking up waste makes a difference in the community and creates positive impacts for the environment by diverting these items from streets, rivers, parks, and other public areas. In doing so this prevents waste from being consumed by wildlife or entering local ecosystems. The 2023 Clean-up resulted in students filling 2.5 large garbage bags with waste in just under an hour. The virtual tool kit used for the 2021 clean-Up gave students the opportunity to spend time outdoors and engage in conservation activities that helped their local environment.

2nd campaign

Name of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Holiday Sustainability Challenge

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Nine staff teams made up of individuals from across administrative units at Brock University took part in the annual Holiday Sustainability Challenge in December of 2022. Together these teams logged their sustainable habits into the Eco Boss Mobile Sustainability App (developed by Blackstone Energy) over the course of 5 days. The more sustainable habits performed during the 5 days the more points a team would receive. These habits included actions such as switching off the lights, using public transportation, taking a shorter shower, recycling etc. The team of staff members with the most points won the title of Holiday Sustainability Champion and received the trophy. This event was also hosted in 2021.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Leading a sustainable lifestyle is the first step in addressing environmental stressors and taking climate action. Every day individuals make choices in their lifestyles that can have lasting negative impact on the environment. This annual competition is designed to encourage the adoption of more sustainable habits through friendly competition, which can become a precursor of wider change to help incentivize climate action on a larger scale. This challenge generates large environmental benefits, the 2021 challenge resulted in over 3.6 tons of CO2 saved, 270 kilograms of waste diverted, and 5300 gallons of water saved. The overall goal is to showcase the easy ways in which everyone can make their lives more sustainable.
