A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
Brock University hosts an annual “Welcome Week” for new incoming students. The week features many events and activities that the students can get involved in that integrate sustainability, mainly, the Welcome Back Sustainability Challenge. Brock University partnered with Blackstone energy services in the development of EcoBoss, an innovative and interactive app to show/track the integration of sustainable solutions into everyday life. The objective of the challenge is to demonstrate and help students realize how easy it is to contribute to the environment through impactful sustainable choices on a regular basis utilizing the EcoBoss. Students compete for 1 week to achieve the highest score. In the end the 10 students with the highest scores will win a prize. This includes a variety of campus store gift cards, an Apple Watch, iPad, or Air Pods. The past 2022 challenge resulted in 6 thousand kg of CO2 savings, 1,073 kg of waste diverted, and 1 thousand liters of water savings.
Brock’s student orientation features a special event through Brock Cares, named Brock Cares Day of Service. This brings together Brock volunteers from across the University to participate in community projects within the Niagara Region. Brock cares works with community partners to develop the projects and recruit Brock volunteers to assist with the various projects identified by our Niagara community partners.
