A brief description of the institution’s main campus and other aspects of the institutional boundary used to complete this report:
BCIT operates across five main campuses and one satellite campus in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
BCIT’s Burnaby campus is the largest campus at 130.7 acres. Established in 1960 on this site as the British Columbia Vocational School in 1960, it was eventually merged with BCIT on the same site. The Burnaby Campus is the administrative centre and comprises the majority of the Institute’s technical and trades programs within a network of 50 buildings constructed over various time periods. Set in a suburban context within close proximity of a major highway, the campus is situated equidistant between two major urban centres with direct transportation connections across the region and to the central business district.
The Centre for Applied Research and Innovation (CARI) is a satellite campus located directly across the street from the main Burnaby campus, and houses the research and innovation arm of BCIT. CARI is also home to a number of strategic partnership tenants including the Knowledge Network, a public broadcaster producing and showcasing documentaries of interest to British Columbians.
The Aerospace Technology Campus, located in Richmond within close proximity to the Vancouver International Airport, was completed in 2007. This campus is the primary educational destination for aerospace maintenance technicians and engineers, airport operations personnel, and commercial pilots.
The Marine Campus is located on the north shore of the Burrard Inlet within the shipbuilding city of North Vancouver, across the water from downtown Vancouver. This campus is the centre of training for the maritime industry in Western Canada offering programs in navigation, marine engineering, seamanship, and maritime safety and security. With bridge and engine room simulators and an indoor pool, students gain experience with realistic scenarios in a safe environment.
The Downtown Campus is located at the heart of Vancouver’s business and tech core and is home to the state-of-the-art Technology Education and Collaboration (TEC) Hub, an innovative IT learning space. This campus primarily services the business sector with professional part time studies courses, and is a growing hub for full time computer programming and graphic arts programs. Voted as one of the world’s top 50 ‘smart’ buildings, the Downtown Campus epitomizes today’s progressive and sustainable building designs incorporating a number of ‘green’ and ‘smart’ features. The campus is outfitted with industry-leading telecommunications and information technology systems and access to public transport (including the SkyTrain and Granville Transit Corridor).
The Annacis Island Campus (Motive Power Centre of Excellence) is located within Annacis Island, an industrial business park within the southern sector of Metro Vancouver. This campus serves larger mechanical trades, including commercial transport and heavy duty (large earth moving and construction) equipment, in addition to a railway conductor program which provides conductor training for the freight, passenger, and light rail industries.
