Which of the following best describes the institution’s approach to rainwater management?:
A brief description of the institution’s green infrastructure and LID practices:
BCIT has installed swales and permeable planted areas alongside hardscapes to allow for stormwater management using permaculture. Rainwater collection has also been installed to use for irrigation purposes to displace use of potable water. Xeriscaping is encouraged to reduce irrigation water use. If irrigation is required, the use of rainwater harvesting and grey water detention is encouraged. All potable water used for irrigation is to be metered.
The daylighting and ecological restoration of Guichon Creek (that runs through campus) has been underway for a number of years and will continue as the campus develops. This work integrates naturalization and green infrastructure for many social and ecological benefits, including rainwater management.
The campus stormwater management strategy strives for a water balanced target throughout the entire Burnaby campus lands. This will provide resiliency to our campus infrastructure while improving the natural hydrological systems, riparian ecosystems and biodiversity. To achieve a water balanced campus, increased stormwater infiltration is encouraged in all softscape locations of the campus to offset the hardscape areas that increase runoff. Further details on the stormwater strategy are below.
A copy of the institution’s rainwater management policy, plan, and/or guidelines:
A brief description of the institution’s rainwater management policy, plan, and/or guidelines that supports the responses above:
BCIT’s Stormwater Management Plan was developed to support the long-range planning and development of the Burnaby campus. The plan is made up of the main report and the supporting appendices: two technical memorandums, and best management practice standards. The plan was developed to support the Campus Design Standards and to provide BCIT a cohesive plan for the implementation of green infrastructure on campus.
The Stormwater Management Plan provides nine elements to develop and implement the recommendations of the stormwater drainage study. These elements include recommended next steps and future studies to advance the stormwater management on the BCIT campus.
- Implement recommended stormwater management criteria for rate control, volume retention, water quality, and conveyance.
- Adopt climate change factors for future infrastructure sizing and precipitation intensity.
- Provide rate control for the campus in the form of regional detention facilities.
- Incorporate stormwater best management practices / green infrastructure on campus to meet volume control targets.
- Implement water quality control for all at-grade impervious areas.
- Complete Detailed Design of Guichon Creek daylighting as the campus develops.
- Develop a plan for green infrastructure tracking and performance monitoring for the campus.
- Develop operation and maintenance programs and scaling plans for green infrastructure and BMPs including implementation of operation and maintenance manuals for individual sites or installations.
- Develop a storm servicing upgrade plan based on development plans.
