An inventory of food and beverage purchases that qualify as sustainably/ethically produced:
A brief description of the methodology used to conduct the inventory, including the timeframe and how representative samples accounted for seasonal variation (if applicable):

The STARS 2.2 Food and Beverage Purchasing Inventory template was used to document food and beverage purchases from June 2022 to May 2023.

Data from food distributors accounted for the vast majority of data. This data provides line item information necessary to classify purchases as plant based or ethically sourced. In addition, some data was taken from the general ledger of these units. This data does not have line item information, but was considered ethically sourced only where units purchased solely certified items (e.g. a vendor that only sells these units RFA/FT coffee beans). Similarly, transactions from the general ledger were considered plant based only where a vendor sells solely commodities such as produce, coffee beans or teas. Seasonal variation does not need to be accounted for as the “sample data” included all transactions from the relevant periods.

A brief description of the institution’s sustainable food and beverage purchasing program:

In 2023, BCIT joined the Feed BC program to increase locally sources food ingredients across government-supported facilities, programs, and services. Although Chartwells, BCIT’s on-campus food services and catering supplier, already sources 90% of its on-campus food in Canada, sourcing locally in BC will further reduce food transport emissions. BCIT has now sourced more than 30% of its food locally.

In addition to Feed BC, Chartwells and BCIT supports in advancing sustainable food services by choosing local, low-packaging, unprocessed foods and energy efficiency in the kitchen, promoting humane animal treatment and farming by using free run, free range eggs, as well as serving Fair Trade coffee.

BCIT also participated in the Pitch and Plate event in 2022 where the BCIT food operations team were pitched local products from sustainable and health-conscious BC brands to embed sustainability across more BCIT foodservice menu options.
