Has the institution offered a free, sustainability-focused course on the public internet in which students were enrolled within the previous three years?:
Yes

Title and a brief description of the institution’s free, online sustainability course:

BCIT offers a free Continuing Education massive open online course (MOOC) on Indigenous Awareness. The course is available online for anyone who wants to increase their understanding of Indigenous people in Canada.

This history is our history. But how well do we know it?

This course promotes an increased understanding of Indigenous people and their place and space in Canada, past and present. Words like Reconciliation and Indigenization are becoming common place and are often followed by questions such as, “What do these words mean? Why do we have to do this? How come I didn’t know about Residential Schools?”. The course will provide the student with foundational knowledge of Indigenous people in the hopes that as the true history and contemporary reality of Indigenous people is more broadly known, Reconciliation can begin.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the historical relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada.

  • Explain past and contemporary realities of Indigenous people.

  • Explain current moves towards, and the importance of, Reconciliation to all Canadians.

This course is not credited. A Statement of Completion certificate is earned if the student passes the quizzes at the end of each module. The course is offered by Indigenous Initiatives and Partnerships. Please contact Indigenous@bcit.ca to reach the instructor with any questions about the course.
