Percentage of all entering students that are provided an opportunity to participate in orientation activities and programming that prominently include sustainability:
A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
Kick Start is BCIT's centralized orientation for all students and is held at the beginning of each term. The Kick Start website (https://www.bcit.ca/welcome/orientation/) holds helpful pre-arrival and transition information along with resources for new students on all campus, including events. The Student Life Office Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/bcitstudentlifeoffice/) posts important information promoting BCIT Student Services and student connection. The Student Life Office YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqaBkbBGawxi_Bqt3QnO3lQ) has videos promoting BCIT Student Services and student connection.
Kick Start events vary by campus. A Student Service Showcase is held twice per term at BCIT’s largest campus in Burnaby – one during lunch time and one at dinner time to engage with as many students as possible. The Sustainability Office hosts a booth at the Burnaby Showcase where over half the student population (undergraduate, graduate and transfer students) attend class. Sustainability staff engage with students about how we define sustainability as “enabling people to lead socially just lives within ecological limits.”
We inform them that the BCIT Student Association and BCIT became a signatory to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Accord. This leads to a discussion on what the SDGs are, how they address multiple dimensions of sustainability, and how BCIT is contributing to them (see additional documentation below for images).
Each SDG has a card with its logo on the front and a short definition on the back. A QR code that links to the BCIT webpage for that SDG is also included on the back. Students are asked to pick a card (goal) that interests them, flip it over and then tell us something about what the goal means to them in their personal life. They are also asked about ways their program, what they are learning at BCIT, and/or their future career relates to the SDG they chose. Students are encouraged to use the QR code on the back of the card to learn more.
