Yes

Does the system use a nationally or internationally recognized standard or guideline?:
No

The nationally or internationally recognized OHSMS standard or guideline used:

If no, provide:

A brief description of the key components of the custom OHSMS:

BYU’s EHS programs are not certified under any OHSMS standards, but several EHS management team members have experience implementing OSHA’s VPP program, ANSI Z10, OHSAS 18001, and ISO 14001, 45001, and 9001. In addition, a number of BYU’s EHS team members are qualified as lead auditors in several of these standards, i.e., 14001, 45001, and 9001.

BYU’s safety management program uses elements from all of the above-mentioned recognized standards and focuses on five main principles: (1) management leadership, (2) employee involvement, (3) worksite analysis, (4) hazard prevention and control, (5) safety and health training.

Part 2. Incidents per FTE employee

A brief description of the methodology used to track and calculate the number of recordable incidents of work-related injury or ill health :

In 2022, there were approximately 18,738 personnel (full and part-time, including part-time students) who worked a calculated total of 21,471,340 labor hours from January 1 to December 31.

An injury becomes reportable when it meets OSHA qualifications for severe injuries. It must be reported within 8 hours and have an official BYU investigation, which may be sent to OSHA upon request. An injury is recordable when medical treatment extends beyond OSHA’s definition of first aid. All reportable injuries are also recordable. These injuries are included on BYU’s official OSHA logs.

Annual number of recordable incidents of work-related injury or ill health per 100 FTE employees:
1.39
