In 2020, a university sustainability officer was appointed, a committee assembled, and a sustainability manager hired. Research was conducted by the sustainability officer and members of the BYU Student Sustainability Initiative to guide early strategic planning efforts. In 2021, a mission, vision, set of values, and high-level strategy was developed by the Sustainability Working Group. External consultants were engaged for benchmarking and baseline reporting. A video was produced to introduce the sustainability office, showcase operational and academic achievements, and advance top-line messaging to internal and external stakeholders. Funding was procured for sustainability office activities. In 2022, the sustainability officer and manager presented the committee's planning efforts to the President's Council, an administrative leadership body, and received approval to begin a STARS assessment. Baseline reporting commenced. After a sustainability manager was hired by the BYU's sponsoring institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, BYU and Church officials met to align expectations, messaging, and goals.
