Does the institution have a bicycle-sharing program or participate in a local bicycle-sharing program?:
A brief description of the bicycle sharing program:
From 2012 to 2022, BYU's bikeshare program offered students and staff longterm bike rentals for a small fee ($25 to $45 per semester). Designed to help participants save money, reduce air pollution, and improve physical fitness, this program was jointly administered by the Sustainability Office and Outdoors Unlimited, BYU's on-campus gear rental and repair shop. Today, BYU partners with the Provo Bicycle Collective, a local nonprofit, to refurbish secondhand bicycles for sale or donation to community members.
Does the institution participate in a car sharing program?:
From 2013 to 2021, a car-sharing program called Zimride, administered on campus by Enterprise, matched drivers with riders via app, replacing a long-running ridesharing board in BYU's Wilkinson Student Center. In that time, participants logged 3.7 million total miles and reduced carbon emissions by more than 2 million pounds. Enterprise suspended the program during the covid-19 pandemic, and BYU is currently exploring other potential partnerships.
Does the institution offer preferential parking or other incentives for fuel efficient vehicles?:
A brief description of the incentives for fuel efficient vehicles:
From 2021 to 2024, BYU offered free electric vehicle charging to any student or employee with a valid parking pass. Those charging stations are now pay-as-you-go, with a lower rate than other local charging stations. Charging on campus is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Does the institution have one or more Level 2 or Level 3 electric vehicle recharging stations that are accessible to student and employee commuters?:
BYU's 10 level-2 EV charging stations were installed in 2021. As mentioned previously, these chargers were available free of charge to anyone with valid, registered BYU parking privileges but are now offered at a reduced rate. They are located in a lot between BYU's basketball arena and conference center.
Does the institution have incentives or programs to encourage employees to live close to campus?:
BYU community members and their families are eligible for free passes to the Utah Transit Authority's busses and trains, which run from Ogden to Provo, with access to downtown Salt Lake and the international airport. In Provo and neighboring Orem, the Utah Valley Express (UVX) bus rapid transit (BRT) system runs continuously, six days a week, from Orem's train station to Provo's train station, with four convenient bus stops on BYU's perimeter and a fifth that has been announced.
Does the institution have other programs or initiatives to encourage more sustainable modes of transportation and/or reduce the impact of student and employee commuting?:
A brief description of other programs or initiatives to encourage more sustainable modes of transportation and/or reduce the impact of student and employee commuting:
BYU aims to be a walkable, rideable campus, with car-free pedestrian zones, bike lanes, bike racks, bike repair stations, and a free student shuttle called the Ryde, which links central campus with many popular student housing complexes, plus BYU's West Campus, located in a nearby former high school. BYU's Rideables Committee works to promote a safe and supportive rideables experience for members of the campus community and encourages the use of rideables as a viable mode of transportation for health, convenience, and enjoyment. BYU's rideables policy can be found at rideables.byu.edu.
