Part 1. Student commute modal split
Total percentage of students that use more sustainable commuting options as their primary mode of transportation:
A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:
An IRB-approved survey led by four engineering capstone students surveyed 930 fellow students in April 2022, with the following results:
- Walk: 56.1%
- Drive alone: 13.6%
- Campus shuttle: 12.9%
- Carpool: 4.7%
- Bicycle, scooter, skateboard, etc.: 4.5%
- Dropped off by someone else: 3.4%
- Public transit (UVX hybrid-electric bus, etc.): 3.3%
- Motorcycle or similar: 0.8%
- Other: 0.8%
- Total, excluding those who drove alone, got dropped off, drove a mootorcycle, or commuted via other means: 82.3%.
Another IRB-approved survey led by four engineering capstone students in April 2024 surveyed 1,190 students and found a higher number of students commuting in a sustainable way: 84.2%. The lower, earlier percentage is reported for this section because it corresponds to the 2022 enrollment numbers above.
