BYU has partnered with United Way since 1963, when BYU's executive vice president helped start the Utah County chapter. Since then, many BYU administrators, professors, and other leaders have served on the United Way Board of Directors and other committees and helped guide and grow United Way and its ability to serve the community. Many other faculty and staff have shared their expertise and research in helping to address local community issues.

Today, BYU volunteers support United Way programs through many hours of service and help these programs make a real difference in the lives of individuals and families. Donations from BYU employees help sustain United Way's efforts in long-term solutions in education, health, and income. BYU is the largest donor of in-kind and cash donations in Utah Valley.

A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability (3rd partnership):

For more than 20 years, BYU Student Alumni has sponsored the largest food drive in Utah County. In 2012, BYU began teaming up with Utah Valley University to collect food and monetary donations for those in our community living in hunger. All donations go to Community Action Services and Food Bank, which can use its leverage to turn each dollar donated into three meals for a family of four or 15 pounds of food. In the process, food waste is prevented, carbon emissions are reduced, and natural resources are conserved.

BYU also works with and supports the Downtown Provo Alliance, Utah Valley Interfaith Association, the Economic Development Corporation of Utah, Envision Utah, Utah Foundation, and Provo City's Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Engineering, Public Safety, and City Council.
